Korean drama Family by Choice just premiered on Wednesday, (9/10), and immediately stole the attention of many fans. The drama starring Hwang In Youp, Jung Chae Yeon, and Bae Hyun Sung is a remake of the phenomenal Chinese drama, Go Ahead.
The story focuses on the emotional journey between the three main characters, namely Kim San Ha, Yoo Joo Won, and Kang Hae Joon, who grow up together as a family despite having no blood ties.
Each of them struggles with past traumas that unite them in a family-like bond. Curious about the story and the problems they go through? Let’s see more!
Kim San Ha
Kim San Ha played by Hwang In Youp is a handsome character, hard on the outside, but actually has a very soft heart. San Ha is known as a figure who prefers to act rather than talk.
San Ha has a dark past, he is often an outlet for the anger of his mother who continues to blame him for his brother’s death. The mother never wanted to see San Ha happy, even when San Ha started laughing and playing with Yoo Joo Won in their new neighborhood, seeing that, his mother just got angry and left him.
In high school, San Ha had to accept the harsh reality that her mother remarried a doctor and had a new daughter. This further hurt San Ha who felt neglected and never received affection from her mother.
Yoo Joo Won
Yoo Joo Won, played by Jung Chae Yeon, is a cheerful woman full of positive energy. Her warm personality often makes her a comfort when people around her feel down.
However, behind her sweet smile, Joo Won holds a deep sadness, she lost her mother since the age of four. Even so, his father’s love made him grow into a loving figure.
Unfortunately, Joo Won’s innocence in understanding the “world” sometimes makes him vulnerable to various problems. This makes Kim San Ha and Kang Hae Joon, who he considers as older brothers, always feel the need to protect him from various threats that might harm him.
Kang Hae Joon
Kang Hae Joon, played by Bae Hyeon Seong, is a cheerful and energetic character, but behind his smile, he holds a deep sadness.
Hae Joon’s past is very similar to Kim San Ha, he was abandoned by his mother who went to Seoul with the promise of returning after her business was done. Unfortunately, ten years passed and his mother never returned.
As a child, Hae Joon lived with his aunt, but his life was not easy. Finally, he moved to Yoo Joo Won’s house because Joo Won’s father could not bear to see Hae Joon’s inadequate life.
The closeness between Hae Joon and Joo Won’s father develops like a father and son relationship. He was raised and sent to school by Joo Won’s father, and thanks to that support, Hae Joon grew up to be a talented teenager in sports, although his heart still holds a sense of longing and hope for his mother.
